ADSAB Child Care Fee Subsidy Wait List:
ADSAB currently has a Fee Subsidy Wait List for parents requiring subsidized child care. Eligible parents are granted Fee Subsidy in the order which they apply and as dollars become available.
Space Availability Wait List:
Due to space availability and the maximum seating requirements for each Child Care Provider’s building, the Child Care Centre you choose for your child may also have a wait list. (Please note, not all Child Care Centers in Algoma have a wait list). You should inquire with the Child Care Provider to see if they have any openings for your child at the same time as you apply for Fee Subsidy. If they have a Space Availability Wait List, you should request being added to their Wait List as well.
You should apply for a subsidy now if you are expecting a child in the future due to pregnancy, adoption or some other circumstance. Applying now will take up some of the time on the waiting list and increases the chances that a subsidy will be available when you you require it for your child.
You can apply for a child care fee subsidy for a future child online or by completing the printable application and forwarding to your nearest ADSAB office.

The actual cost of child care is determined by the individual child care providers. The rates often vary depending on the age of the child and the hours of care required. For current child care fees, contact the child care provider directly. A directory of the child care providers in the Algoma District is available under the Child Care Locations section of this website.
The amount of subsidy that you will receive towards the actual cost of child care is determined through an Income Test. This amount will determine what your parental contribution, if any at all, you will be responsible for.
Eligibility for child care subsidy is based on the "adjusted income" which is your net income reported on line 236 of last year's Federal Notice of Assessment document. As a result, parents applying for child care subsidy must provide a copy of:
- The Federal Notice of Assessment, which may be used by families not receiving the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) OR
- The Canadian Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) Notice for those families receiving the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB).
Persons with an adjusted income of $20 000.00 or less will be eligible for full subsidy. Typically a person can expect their Income Testing to fall within 3 main brackets. Based on their income, parents can expect to pay the following annually towards child care costs:
| Income Amount |
Calculation of Parental Contribution |
| Under $20,000.00 |
0% of income under $20,000.00
(Full fee subsidy, no calculation) |
| $20,000.00 - $40,000.00 |
0% of income before $20,000.00
plus
10% of income over $20,000.00 |
| Over $40,000.00 |
0% of income before $20,000.00
plus
10% of any income over $20,000.00
plus
30% of any income over $40,000.00 |
Note: This annual amount will be used to further determine monthly and daily contributions.
Please refer to the Information Required document for a list of all documents that will be required of you at the time of your Verification Interview.
All licensed child care programs provide receipts for Income Tax purposes.
You will receive a receipt for the annual parental contribution you paid to your Child Care Provider. You will not receive a receipt for the amount of subsidy that was paid by ADSAB, to the Child Care Provider on your behalf.
For example, if the child care cost is $25 per day and based on your income test, ADSAB has determined you have the ability to pay $10 per day, as your parental contribution, you will receive a receipt for that amount.
Both centre-based and home-based Child Care Services are licensed under the Day Nurseries Act. When parents choose a quality Child Care Provider they can expect:
- Staff is always present to help children develop and learn.
- Children are treated in a positive manner that enhances self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Through the licensing process, the centres/homes are required to meet certain standards; some of which include the layout of physical space and setting, emergency and fire procedures, and approved food preparation standards.
Centre-Based Care offers:
- A separate facility, usually located in a school, community center or other building
- Professional staff with training in early childhood education
- Activities that are created for children at different stages of development
- An environment which is free from dangerous objects and materials
- A setting which is designed for children
- Nutritious meal planning and routines
- Toys and playground equipment which are age-appropriate and chosen with the safety and enjoyment of children in mind
Home Based Child Care offers:
- A family-like setting in the care giver's home for up to five children from infant to school-aged
- Children from the same family can be cared for together, often in their own neighborhood, close to school and friends
- Hours of care can be flexible and may be adapted to suit the needs of individual families (e.g. parents working shift work)
- Planned activities for children at different stages of development
- An environment which is free from dangerous objects and materials
- Nutritious meal planning and routines
- Toys and playground equipment which are age-appropriate and chosen with the safety and enjoyment of children in mind
If you require additional child care hours/days for a child that is currently attending a child care program, or you require care for another child in your household, you need to complete a "Request for Additional Subsidized Child Care Form", found in the Forms Section of this website. You will continue to receive the amount of subsidy you currently receive but will be placed on the ADSAB Fee Subsidy Wait List for the cost of the additional care days/hours for the additional child who requires care.
Please ensure that you check with your Child Care Provider to ensure they have space for your child or for your child to attend the requested additional hours/days of care.
Currently, the Algoma District Services Administration Board purchases special resource services from the Children's Rehabilitation Centre-Algoma
Special needs resources provide staff, equipment, supplies and/or services to support children with special needs in integrated child care settings.
Services for children with special needs are offered in all licensed child care programs within the Algoma District. This supports the integration of children with special needs into community licensed child care services. These services are available at no additional cost to the parents.
Resource teachers assist child care agencies in the assessment of children with special needs, prepare individual program plans for each child and provide support to regular caregivers in developing and carrying out daily activities for each special needs child.
Resource teachers also work with parents and program staff to ensure there is a consistent expectation and approach for the children.

The Ontario Child Care Supplement (OCCS) for Working Families is a tax-free monthly payment to help with the costs of raising children under the age of seven. The program benefits low-to-middle income single or two-parent families, families with one stay-at-home parent, or families with one or both parents studying or in training.
A family does not have to have a child in a formal daycare to apply for the supplement.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Starting in 2008, your monthly payment will be reduced or, depending on your family income, may be eliminated by the amount of Ontario Child Benefit received.
