What is Child Care Fee Subsidy

A child care fee subsidy provides financial assistance towards the cost of licensed child care for parents who are "persons in need" (determined by income testing) and for parents of children with special needs.

Effective April 1st, 2006 there is a Wait List for child care fee subsidy in the District of Algoma.

NOTE: If you are in receipt of Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program or have an annual net income of less than $20,000.00, you automatically meet the financial criteria for child care fee subsidy and are placed on the fee subsidy Wait List once your application is completed and received.

If your annual net income is more than $20,000.00, an Income Test is completed to determine your parental contribution amount.

A child care fee subsidy is provided to support the employment, training and educational needs of parents, as well parental relief and services required for children with special needs.

Subsidy is available in a variety of child care settings for children 0-12 years of age. Parents can choose the type of care they want for their child from either a licensed child care centre or a home child care provider through a licensed home care agency.

Financial assistance is also available to participants in the Ontario Works Program towards the costs of licensed or unlicensed child care. Ontario Works participants should contact their worker for further details.

In addition, the Government of Ontario also provides financial assistance through the Ontario Child Care Supplement for Working Families (OCCSWF), the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) and a Workplace Child Care Tax Incentive.

  • The Ontario Child Care Supplement (OCCSWF) for Working Families is a tax-free monthly payment to help with the costs of raising children under the age of seven.  The program benefits low-to-middle income single or two-parent families, families with one stay-at-home parent, or families with one or both parents studying or in training.
A family does not have to have a child in daycare to apply for the supplement.

  • The Universal Child Care Benefit is a new initiative which was introduced in July 2006 to help support the child care choices of Canadian families through direct financial support. The UCCB payment is paid on behalf of children under the age of 6 years in installments of $100 per month per child.

  • The Workplace Child Care Tax Incentive supports businesses that invest in building or renovating licensed child care facilities, either on-site or in the broader community, for children of working parents. It is available to incorporated and unincorporated businesses other than those in the business of providing child care.
