Algoma EMS, one of four services operated by the Algoma District Services Administration Board, is responsible for the prehospital care and transportation of the sick and injured within the District of Algoma.
The Algoma District is bordered on the west by the Thunder Bay District at the northern tip of Lake Superior. Our district cradles the north and eastern sides of Lake Superior as well as the north shore of Lake Huron as far as the community of Spanish in the east. The city of Sault Ste. Marie is situated in the very south-west corner of the Algoma District. Algoma EMS does not cover Sault Ste. Marie and the unincorporated townships associated with the city.
Algoma EMS responds to over 6,500 calls each year. Our service is dispatched by the Sault Ste. Marie Central Ambulance Communication Centre (CACC) and our coverage area is approximately 48,000 sq. kms in size. That is over 8 times the size of Prince Edward Island!
Algoma EMS operates sixteen frontline and two spare ambulances. Each sector has a First Response Unit which also doubles as an administrative vehicle.
Our service employs approximately 70 dedicated paramedics and is organized into Western and Eastern Divisions with four ambulance bases in each division. Each base has a paramedic Work Group Leader responsible for overseeing base functions i.e. base duties, stock supplies, etc.
The EMS leadership team is made up of the Chief, the Deputy Chief and two Commanders of Operations. Each Commander is responsible for the day to day operations and service delivery within their divisions. In addition to other operational responsibilities, the Deputy Chief also oversees the quality of service delivery and staff development. Overall service delivery and all operations are ultimately the responsibility of the Chief who reports directly to the Chief Administrative Officer of the Board.
