The program previously known as "General Welfare" has changed. Ontario Works now provides both financial and employment assistance to people in financial need while they take the necessary steps required to get a job.
The Ontario Works Program respects a person's dignity, builds self-esteem and promotes independence. It also encourages and promotes employment and community involvement to each of its participants.
Each participant is involved in the development of an "Action Plan" which identifies and addresses an individual's barriers to employment. By following this action plan, participants are involved in activities where they acquire training, education and personal life skills while receiving a monthly living allowance.
The Ontario Works Program and staff are here to assist persons on their road to success. If you are currently an Ontario Works participant, please don't hesitate to share your employment goals and needs with your Case Worker.
Persons previously referred to as "recipients" of General Welfare are now considered "participants" of Ontario Works. They are persons who for a variety of reasons, have been unable to retain or achieve financial independence. The Ontario Works Program is committed to helping these people achieve their potential by giving them the tools they need to succeed.
